Hockey Dad are a surf-rock duo from Windang on the New South Wales south coast: Zach Stephenson on guitar and vocals, Billy Fleming on drums. They grew up across the road from each other and have been playing together since 2013.
When they came to Marksenfest they had a single EP to their name. ‘Boronia’ followed in 2016, then ‘Blend Inn’ went top ten in 2018 and ‘Brain Candy’ reached number two in 2020. ‘Join the Club’ landed at number 18 in triple j’s Hottest 100 of 2017, and they’ve charted in the countdown in most years since. ‘Blend Inn’ was nominated for Australian Album of the Year at the J Awards, and the band have toured North America twice.
At Marksenfest
Hockey Dad played Marksenfest 2014 on Sunday 12 October, two years before their first album, on a bill with Timberwolf, The New Yorks, Hungry Dreamers, Lazy Daze, The Cardinals and Transit. They are the earliest name on the Marksenfest alumni wall, and still the best argument for buying a ticket before you’ve heard of anyone on the poster.
